Grainy Footage? Dead DVR? How to Tell If Your CCTV System Needs Replacing
If your camera system is giving you problems, the fix isn’t always “replace everything.” Sometimes it’s the DVR. Sometimes it’s the cameras. Here’s how to tell the difference.
Signs Something Needs Attention
- Footage is grainy, dark, or unusable when you actually need it
- You can’t view cameras remotely from your phone
- The DVR/NVR is failing, freezing, or won’t record reliably
- Storage fills up too fast, or footage isn’t retained long enough
- There are coverage gaps the current cameras don’t reach
- The system still uses outdated analog cameras with no upgrade path
Often Just Needs an Upgrade
If the wiring is in good shape and only the recorder is outdated — or you just want to add remote viewing to an otherwise-working system — a full replacement usually isn’t necessary.
Usually Needs Full Replacement
Analog cameras with no HD path, real coverage gaps that need new camera positions, or coax-only wiring that’s already being redone — these are the cases where starting fresh makes more sense.
One more question worth asking: can your existing cameras work with a new system? Sometimes yes, depending on the camera type and what the new recorder supports — which is why an on-site evaluation matters before assuming everything needs replacing.
